Is Smart Working on Its First Ever Crossover for 2016?

It is rumored that Smart is working on its first ever crossover model to be released by 2016. According to a new report out of Germany, the crossover would be based on an all-new platform that will also underpin the next-generation fortwo. The new crossover model, with a higher ride-height and more aggressive off-road style is expected to be the first Smart to offer all-wheel drive.

Even though this seems like a far-fetch idea, it really isn’t. With MINI now offering their own crossover (the Countryman), and recently launched its new Paceman model, which essentially is a crossover coupe. When it comes to Smart, it is still unknown whether they plan to offer a two-door or four-door model, or even both. This was a good move on Smart’s part especially with sub-compact crossovers starting to become a popular segment, with cars like the Nissan Juke, while Honda plans its own soft-roader based of the Fit.

Smart has showcased numerous crossover style concept cars over the past few years including the ForStars concept show is the image above, although a more realistic concept is expected to be revealed next year.
