First Woman Ever Wins the Daytona 500 Pole

On Sunday February 17th, Danica Patrick became the first woman to win the pole position at a NASCAR top-division race, and she did so while qualifying for the biggest event of the year, the Daytona 500.

After posting a lap of 196.434 mph on Sunday, Patrick will start in the pole position fo rthe 55th annual Daytona 500. In her qualifying lap, she covered the 2.5 mile oval in 45.817 seconds, which was also the fastest qualifying mark for the Daytona 500 since 1990.

Having taken the honors in the Nationwide Series race at Daytona last season, this is Patrick’s second pole in NASCAR. After a qualifying run of 196.292 mph, Jeff Gordon will start in second. The Daytona 500 will kick off on Sunday February 24th.
