Porsche Revealed New Concept Car at the Paris Motor Show

After expanding from the sports car market to the SUV and sedan market, Porsche has decided to branch out even further by creating a station wagon called the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo. Not only is it a station wagon, but the Panamera Sport is also a hybrid. With a 333-hp V6 engina mated to a 95-hp electric motor, the Panamera Sport gives twice the output of that found in the current Panamera and Cayenne hybrid models. The total system output is rated at 416-hp, and in this car being a hybrid, allows for an electric range of over 30 km (18.6 miles) at speeds of up to 130 km/h (80mph). According to Porsche, the fuel economy rating of this vehicle is 3.51/100 km or 67 MPG. The driver could choose to drive this car in the pure electric of hybrid mode by using the press of a button on the steering wheel.

Porsche claims that the Panamera Sport can go 0-60 time of less than 6.0 seconds. If there’s any surprise with this wagon, it is that it’s smaller than the current Panamera. Porsche believes that this car is a look at the future of how performance and efficiency can be combined. Read the rest of this entry »

Law is Passed in California to Allow Driverless Cars

It won’t be long until we will be sitting in driverless cars to get to our destinations.  As we speak, Google is working on making autonomous cars for the future. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California went to Google headquarters on Wednesday, September 26th to sign the historical law which allows the self operated cars to make their own way on the roads. At the signing ceremony, the governor rode in the passenger seat of a self driven Toyota Prius. The company is optimistic that these cars could be beneficial to the physically handicapped and blind person as well as improve the overall quality of life of people. These cars may even solve the daily issue of traffic congestion in major cities.

Google has been working on the development of these autonomous cars since 2009 and has even taken them out on the roads of California for testing. Google’s driverless cars will be working with radar sensors, video cameras, laser, and a database of information collected from manual cars which will help the navigation of these cars. The new law will be effective next year and will establish the safety and performance code for testing the driverless cars. Nevertheless, it will be mandatory to have an operator in the driver’s seat so they can control the car in an emergency. This type of technology is dated back all the way to the 1950’s when General Motors released their Dream Cars based on the autopilot feature.

Since Google does not plan on manufacturing these cars themselves, they will be partnering with the leading industry players for production. BMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo are some of the leading companies that are already starting to develop the autonomous technology for the future. One of the leading chip makes, Intel, will also invest $100 million for the development of the future automobile technology. Nevada and Florida, lik California, have passed similar laws to allow driverless vehicles on the road. This proves that the idea of sitting in a car and having a stress free drive is not so far away from reality.

Tesla Presents Supercharger Charging Station with Promise of 100 locations by 2015

Tesla Motors shocked the automotive world by revealing the ‘Supercharger network’. The Tesla Superchargers are quick charging stations that will be located along well-traveled routes in North America.

As of now, there are six active locations with plan of 100 stations by the end of 2015. According to Tesla, the Supercharger stations are designed to give electric cars half of a charge in approximately 30 minutes, which amount to 150 miles of range.

The six Supercharger stations are located in California, parts of Nevada, and Arizona and by next year Tesla plans to install Superchargers in high traffic areas across the continental United States. This will allow for purely electric travel from Vancouver to San Diego, Miami to Montreal, and Los Angeles to New York. In the second half of 2013, Tesla will also start installing Superchargers in Europe and Asia.

“The technology at the heart of the Supercharger was developed internally and leverages the economies of scale of existing charging technology already used by the Model S, enabling Tesla to create the Supercharger device at minimal cost. The electricity used by the Supercharger comes from a solar carport system provided by Solarcity, which results in almost zero marginal energy cost after installation,” Tesla said.

“Tesla’s Supercharger network is a game changer for electric vehicles, providing long distance travel that had a level of convenience equivalent to gasoline cars for all practical purposes. However, by making electric long distance travel at no cost, an impossibility for gasoline cars, Tesla is demonstrating just how fundamentally better electric transport can be. We are giving the Model S the ability to drive almost anywhere for free on pure sunlight,” stated by Elon Musk, Tesla Motors co-founder and CEO.
